Word of the Day—Stretcher

For the first time in my life, I was being brought for medical care. I was on a stretcher, being hoisted into an ambulance by the time I came to. Blood blacked out the vision in one of my eyes. I tried to sit up, before a heavy hand pushed me back down.

I actually have a few scenes in mind in which this could work. I’m not much for plugging my own work, so I’ll keep the details to myself. One of my characters is in a … “law-enforcement” and rescue role, and it’s entirely possible he got injured in one of his tours of duty. Thus, he wakes up on a stretcher, headed for the hospital.

I can see him not being very pleased about hospitals though. Perhaps he’s had a bad experience in the past with them. Perhaps he’s afraid of what they’ll find.

Word of the Day—Crew

It was supposed to be a NICE evening--the only one that I would have off this week. Then this punk and his crew come out of this alleyway and start making threats like they own the streets. Like they think they can scare me.... I'm just standing here trying to concentrate--which one should lose his teeth first?

Okay, I kind of had an idea in mind with this word the moment I saw it pop up on the screen. I admit, this one is more based around the “crimefighting” or even “superhero” genre, but hey, if you can’t have fun with your word-of-the-day, what’s the point in doing it at all, right?

This scene, I imagine being kind of a revelation for the criminal and unscrupulous of a corrupt city—that not everyone is a victim to be taken advantage of, just as these punks are about to find out the hard way!

Word of the Day—Doorknob

The only thing keeping me from turning the doorknob and entering through the front door, was for what I knew was waiting for me on the other side. I knew, despite the lack of reply, there was someone lurking, a large-caliber weapon trained on where I would burst in.

Well, this post would be rather easy to use under almost any appropriate circumstance. It’s suspenseful, it’s just descriptive enough to not be completely vague—I like it. I like it a lot.

Word of the Day—Bandages

Blood was everywhere. There was nothing but red hand prints and the markings of a body being dragged through the gore. Guess bandages wouldn't help this guy....

This could probably come in handy with a murder mystery or a crime drama. Maybe a thriller or a tragedy.

Word of the Day—Suggestion

I'd never heard such an idiotic suggestion in my entire life--that made sense, anyway. I wasn't about to admit it to this guy, but his advice actually did make sense. I wasn't sure how to react except that usual angry way you act when you're beaten, yelling in frustration to drown out the person who was right, to put off the illusion you're still convinced they're wrong.

… I have no idea.

Word of the Day—Bucket

The bucket was the last thing on my mind as I carried it down to the river. No one needed to think I was nervous about it or thinking about it. If I did, then someone ELSE would think about it or notice that its cargo wasn't exactly normal.

Hmm … y’know, to be honest, I don’t know what’s in the bucket. Why is this person trying to get rid of its contents—or are they? Is it something harmful? Something implicating? Why does this person fear someone else inquiring about the bucket and its contents?

Word of the Day—Overalls

The last time I saw him, he wore a pair of overalls and sandals. I could hardly believe how much he'd changed since then. Now he wore a suit, a pair of nice shades, and carried a gun at his hip.

I think this WotD just might be obscure enough to use with just about anything. I see a lot of potential for it, if I can just find the right situation.
